Simile for American System of Separation and Checks and Balances

The Checks and Balances and America's system of separation is like a tree.  Each branch, the judicial, legislative, and Executive are all branches on the tree.  For all of them to work, they must be in tact with the whole system and work together through the tree trunk.  Also, the entire tree, the government is anchored by the roots which can represent the Constitution.

  1. I agree with this simile because the three branches are like branches on a tree, and maybe that is where they received their title of "branches". If one of them was stronger or heavier (holding more power) than the other, the tree could fall apart, as our government would if one branch held more power than another. I find it interesting that you said the roots could be the Constitution, anchoring the government in place. I never thought of it that way, but it makes a lot of sense. Could the citizens of the US be another example of the roots?

  2. This simile makes sense because there is a separation of powers in the government, which the branches show, but it also illustrates the fact that even though they have separate powers they are still part of the same thing and have to work together. Also it shows that the government is from the people. The tree is growing from the country which is made from the people.Do you think that the local governments could also be its "roots" or do you believe that stems from the ideas in the constitution too?

  3. I agree with this simile because its true that each branch of the government has some independence, but for its survival they need to be connected to each other to prevent one branch from becoming too powerful or heavy enough to break the tree. Also the roots are very important because they hold the tree in place over time just like the Constitution keeps the three branches of government in check.
Would you say the branches are evenly powerful or does one overshadow the others?
Does the Constitution in your opinion hold the branches firmly together or do the branches tend to be more flexible?
